2017 Keynote Speaker

Dr. Karim Boustany's impact as a successful Professor, Research Scientist and Engineer allows him to present solutions to today's industry pressures from unique and thought-provoking stand-points. His dedication to the betterment of healthcare is the driving force of his work within the healthcare industry and numerous universities across the globe.
Karim C. Boustany, PhD

Assistant Professor, Lebanese American University Dept. of Industrial Engineering

Karim C. Boustany, who earned a PhD in Industrial Engineering and a Lean Healthcare Black Belt certification from Purdue University, provides a distinguished perspective on the future of healthcare data analytics. Dr. Boustany was selected as a Semi-Finalist at the 2015 Harvard Healthcare Acceleration Challenge. He has 10 years of experience in healthcare operations research, education, and strategy. He worked for MD Anderson Cancer Center, Purdue University School of Biomedical Engineering, Krannert School of Management, Purdue Healthcare Advisors, the Veterans Administration, the University of Chicago Medical Center, Eskenazi Health (formerly named Wishard Hospital), and Indiana University Health.

He then founded and currently directs a Chicago-based firm, Lean System Experts, which specializes in developing and implementing algorithms that analyze complex data for the healthcare industry. He also serves as Adjunct Professor at Indiana University, Graduate Faculty at Central Michigan University, and Research Affiliate at Regenstrief Institute. Additionally, Dr. Boustany works as Assistant Professor at the Lebanese American University. He moved his base to Lebanon in order to be embedded in a region where stress disorders are prevalent given that it has seen significant conflicts, wars, and migration. There, he started the Initiative for Research in Implementation Science where he and his team study implementation strategies for sustainable community-based interventions that target individuals who suffer from damaging stress disorders.

His findings are expected to generate knowledge that could be applied to other regions of the world for various applications such as populations that have low income and low access to quality health care.

Using the context of his research, Dr. Boustany will highlight the need for a robust socio-technical infrastructure that collects precise data on one hand, and adaptive computer algorithms that can readily analyze data and detect actionable signals on the other hand. In his opinion, leveraging healthcare data analytics and communities will accelerate the spread of successful interventions that enable populations to manage their health and hence become productive members of their communities. Lastly, he will explain why planning for our future must be well-engineered.
